Haiti COVID-19 Update

Thank you for your continued prayers and encouragement during these difficult days. As COVID-19 reached the borders of Haiti back in March, the government, regional departments, and communities began putting precautions in place much like the rest of the world. We have been working diligently at Peredo Community Hospital and on the Peredo campus taking all safety precautions such as curfew, hand washing stations, wearing masks, taking temperatures of staff, and staying home.

To date, Haiti has 182 confirmed cases from its 1 testing center. Most of the population including our area in SE Haiti does not have access to a testing center. Inflation has skyrocketed as a result of business and market closures and difficulty in getting goods in and out of the country. A week ago $1 USD = 97 Gourdes and today $1 USD = 108 Gourdes. The country did receive 1 of 5 cargo flights from China with medical equipment and personal protective gear late last week.

The Peredo Community Hospital staff continues to compassionately meet the needs of the community as each day patients are coming to the hospital for knowledge, reassurance, guidance, and healing. PCH saw over 750 patients in the month of April. There is much fear throughout the country. But we are grateful for our doctors, nurses, technicians, and administrative staff who continue to serve and bring hope!

We are also grateful to have peace from Christ that surpasses all understanding! When I think of the situation we are in and the difficulty this virus has caused, we must continue to focus on God’s majesty instead of our circumstances. We must focus on God’s faithfulness instead of our resources or lack of resources. And we must focus on God’s blessings instead of worrying about tomorrow because our future is in His hands. No matter how difficult or uncertain life may be, as Christians, we know we are in good hands!

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
