Miracles

We’ve all heard the story of Jesus performing his first miracle at a wedding celebration in Cana. With a little prompting from his mother, he changed water into wine and the guests were served.

In February, one family from the community of Grand Bois witnessed their own miracle as a grand wedding celebration took place. Seven couples were wed in one weekend and through these celebrations, Roro happened to meet a family of seven who were in great need. After talking with the family and seeing they desperately needed better housing, Roro decided something had to be done. Haitian Christian Outreach happened to have a short-term team in the area with Roro at the time and so everyone went into action to build the family a new house. A house that could fit all seven people and protect them from the varying weather in the mountains of Haiti.

One member of the team recounts his experience meeting the family:

After a 2-hour trip standing in the back of a truck and hiking 45 minutes, we arrived at the top of the mountain. The family was very poor and the living conditions disheartening. The family was very respectful and the children well behaved. The family welcomed us with open arms and were appreciative we were there to help. The family was very proud of their small hut and the land they were farming with hand tools. They gave praise to God for blessing them with shelter and food.

The children all had responsibilities, and it seemed they never played. We taught them how to jump rope, play marbles, color, and build a racetrack for the trucks and cars we brought them. We also taught them how to play tag. The children seemed to have so much fun. The family had beautiful smiles and had so much joy. They had so little but gave praise to God for blessing them with so much.

When it was time to leave, the father had tears in his eyes. He gave us hugs and told us we are always welcome in their home. As we were leaving, we laid hands on the family and prayed for them. We hiked up the mountain to bless a brother and sister in Christ with a house. We hiked down the mountain humbled and blessed by a poor mountain family that has so few material possessions but are so rich in their faith and love for Christ, and trust in his goodness and mercy to provide all their needs.

Miracles come in all shapes and sizes. The miracle for this sweet family of seven was a house. In the story of Jesus’ first miracle at a wedding in Cana, the bible says, “What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.” (John 2:11) We don’t believe in Jesus because of his miracles. We believe because of his glory revealed in the miracle.
